The initial brief was to investigate design possibilities for a disused, Grade 2 Listed building which had been the Tin fabrication space in the old castle Works in Llanelli. It was this Works which gave Llanelli the nick name Tinopolis, and the Scarlett?s rugby team ?The Sospans?. The scheme was expanded to include a study of the County Arts / Theatre provision, resulting in the realisation that there was a need for a major auditorium and associated facilities. The project was submitted to the Big Lottery fund. A fund set up to accept national bids for up to ?24m grant. Out of over 300 initial entries Carmarthen were selected in the final 12no which received ?250,000 grant to develop the scheme to RIBA stage D. The project criteria were that the architecture was ?iconic? and that it was ?Community owned?. The concept was developed in collaboration with ABK Architects whom, it was felt carried a considerable reputation towards the ?iconic? requirement of the submission. Community ?ownership? was fostered by several public meetings and exhibitions as the design developed in order to take on board local requirements and aspirations. The final project was shortlisted in the last 8 and finally only 3 were funded. Lawray are currently looking at a smaller version, known as ?Works 2' or Llanelli Theatre which is intended to be funded by Carmarthenshire. The centre included:- 500 seat auditorium 250 seat studio theatre, Rehearsal and administrative offices for the centre. 150 seat lecture / film studio. Incubator units for starter arts businesses. Cafe, bar facilities. Community arts spaces. Art Gallery. Open piazza space for multi purpose activities
