Phase two of the urban block shared with The Lighthouse has the same constraints of the necessity of lightweight construction to protect the train tunnels below. King’s Cross Bridge replaces a single storey brick building which has allowed the new lighter weight construction to rise to 3 storeys, although the second floor has a large void to prevent the mass exceeding that of the existing. The ground floor will house a restaurant while the upper floor will be office space. The design has to incorporate the retention of the original basement ticket office structure for the old Metropolitan station and platforms which remain. The design strategy is to create an illuminated volume, which floats over the sea of traffic that surrounds the site. The height and rhythm of the façade mimics that of The Lighthouse tying the two buildings in a single harmonious block. Alternating panels of bronze mesh and clear solar control glazing set in limestone fins reflects the solid and void pattern of The Lighthouse. On site
