Listed Building - Grade II, Within a Conservation Area, New Build
Lathams was commissioned by Derbyshire developer Cathelco to design and implement a scheme for the conversion of the important Grade II Listed Castle Hill House in Bakewell. Set in spectacular grounds overlooking Bakewell, the main house and stable block had been used as a boarding house for a local school. The site is within both the Peak Park and Local Conservation Areas. Lathams proposals were driven by a market requirement for professionals and empty nesters in the area and led to a careful split of the main house and stable block into 8 mews houses and apartments grouped round the original courtyard, removing inappropriate additions and re-establishing much of the original layout. A former gardeners cottage has been extended and 2 new houses, replacing a dilapidated 1960s dormitory block, set in the grounds extend the range of properties available. Replacing the footprint of a 1970s dormitory block are 2 new houses. Part earth sheltered and green roofed these houses use local stone to form a plinth under strikingly modern glazed upper levels.
