Islington

Within a Conservation Area
This Victorian maisonette in a Conservation Area in Islington, has been reconfigured and extended, to convert a previously dark, segmented property into a light, spacious and modern family home. Bedrooms are relocated to the more private upper level and the living spaces are relocated to the lower level and extended to enjoy a direct relationship with the courtyard garden. A compact plywood ‘box’ is inserted into the spacious open plan living area, and efficiently incorporates all the functional items such as stairs, kitchen, storage and utility. Natural materials comprising timber, plywood, stainless steel, polished concrete and white plaster are used throughout. The restrained nature of the material palette complements the simplicity of the spaces. The project has been widely published and has featured in Grand Designs Magazine, Homebuilding and Renovating Magazine, Metro Property, Dezeen, Archdaily, Enki, Dwell and World Interior News.
