This terrace of four houses which is located within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, provides high-quality living accommodation with integral workspace. Designed to maximise flexibility and adaptability, the internal configuration allows the dwellings to be used in a number of ways to suit specific and changing needs of young individuals, couples or families. Spaces in the lower two levels of the three-storey houses can be used interchangeably for bedrooms, offices, workshops or enlarged living areas. A frame structure and the use of non-load bearing internal partitions also allows for ease of adjustment of internal layouts as required. The design is derived from the particular nature of the site. Set over three levels the spaces are housed under a large monopitch roof, oriented to follow the significant slope across the site. The internal expression of the roof pitch heightens the sense of spaciousness within the rooms below. Dual-aspect open-plan living, kitchen and dining spaces are located on the mid-level opening directly out onto rear south-west oriented private gardens which capture the sun. The building is clad in local stone and timber which relates to the local vernacular of traditional housing and agricultural buildings. The new housing however is detailed and assembled in a contemporary manner. The delineation of the gardens is also formed using timber and stone thereby seamlessly integrating the terrace into the landscape.
