The award winning station and public open space was completed on time and on budget in December 2011. The project – past of Network Rail’s £6 billion Thameslink upgrade programme – created a new tree-lined route into the station which was previously plagued by overcrowding. Upgraded station provides gating and ticketing facilities, staff and passenger support accommodation, as well as a small retail concession. The new way to the station key accent of the station became green glazed bricks in a variety of shades with a saw-tooth profile to help guide pedestrians ‘intuitively’ into the new station.
