Within a Conservation Area
Situated in the Highgate conservation area, this end-of-terrace house in a conservation area was improved by incorporating a two-storey side extension to provide new bathrooms and a rear extension for a new kitchen. Additionally, internal works were carried out to unify all spaces stylistically. The client’s brief was clear: All changes should establish a strong connection between the house and its natural environment, the new spaces should improve access to natural light, original features should be kept where possible, and a sustainable approach to materials and future energy use should be key. We value this type of 21st-century challenge. The following are examples of how we followed the brief: We restored the existing floorboards for all floors and combined them with reclaimed ones. Rigid insulation was installed underfloor to ensure substantial reductions in energy consumption. Both extension walls and the kitchen island were built utilizing reclaimed bricks. In the kitchen, large double-glazed windows and a triple-glazed roof ensure that the space feels naturally integrated into the garden yet remains comfortably conditioned both in summer and winter. Repurposed marble offcuts were sourced to create work surfaces.
