In 2019, Koha Architects completed the full refurbishment and extension of Trevascus Farm, a formerly derelict farmhouse located in the Cornish countryside, with far-reaching views across the natural landscape towards St Austell Bay. The project has been widely recognised, earning a nomination for Best Extension / Alteration to an Existing Dwelling at the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2020. Koha Architects acted as principle designers, overseeing all architectural aspects of the transformation. The main works included the addition of a substantial new two-storey extension to the west of the existing stone farmhouse, re-slating the original roof, the removal of the central chimney to improve internal spatial flow, and a full internal and external refurbishment of the existing building. A new accessway was created to the north of the farmhouse to improve vehicular and pedestrian movement, while a suite of carefully designed external works helped re-integrate the building into its surrounding rural landscape. Sustainability was a central focus of the project. Trevascus Farm exemplifies Koha Architects’ commitment to circular construction principles—making extensive use of natural, local, and robust building materials, reusing excavated stone and soil on site, and incorporating renewable energy solutions to reduce dependence on the grid. The result is a carefully crafted home that celebrates its heritage while embracing low-impact contemporary living.
