This was a self-build project for a young couple with children, located in spare land at the side of their existing end-of-terrace 1950's house. The site is part of a landscaped cul-de-sac, tucked in behind Lyham Road, with views out towards the ancient Brixton windmill. The house is part single/part 2 storied, with the ground floor level lowered to limit the overall height of the building. Entry is via a sunny (south-facing) sunken courtyard, with a pond to reflect light into the building. This garden is wrapped with 6' high green mesh is intended to be covered eventually by planting. The ground floor contains the living/dining and kitchen areas with a study/library area capable of being closed off by sliding doors that are recessed within the wall. The solid timber stairs are naturally top-lit and lead to the 1st floor bedroom, bathroom and storage. Advantage was taken of the sunny nature of the site, and a photovoltaic array was installed on the higher roof. These generate, on average, around 1,130kWh of clean electricity/year and save around 480kg of carbon dioxide/year.
