Listed Building - Grade II
This Grade 2 listed cottage and out-buildings required complete refurbishment. The main cottage has been re-modelled and extended to improve its internal spaces and connections to the garden. Internally the cottage was an amalgamation of original structure and later additions. Cottage: Our aim was to open up some of the newer walls and floors to expose the original structure. We added a large bay window and french doors to create a better relationship with the garden and an illusion of light and space. The bathroom has been relocated upstairs, the staircase reconfigured and the kitchen moved to the heart of the cottage. The existing oak frame was stripped and oiled, leaded lights were made to match existing and oak secondary glazing was added. Reclaimed materials have been combined with new materials to complement the existing character and provide a modern interpretation. Guest Lodge: The guest lodge (featured image) has been designed to provide a complementary space to the main cottage, built on the footprint of a previous outbuilding. The lodge accommodates a kitchen, shower room, living area and mezzanine sleeping platform located amongst exposed rafters. Although newly built, all of its materials match those of the cottage. The effect is essentially traditional, until the large sliding wall panels open, transforming the lodge into a modern space with a seamless link to the garden.
