Within a Conservation Area, New Build
An existing Coach House was demolished to make way for a new family house on a steeply sloping site in a Conservation Area, while the adjacent, existing house has been converted into 6 flats. The Coach House has a modest appearance from the street and is subordinate to the main Victorian dwelling, however it exploits the level change to provide extensive family accommodation to the rear on a series of terraces. It has an open-plan living-dining-kitchen area with top light and a fully glazed sliding-folding door to the terrace. The staircase was designed in collaboration with a sculptor, Andrew Sabin. The site work was managed by a construction manager, Lawrence Webb Ltd, who was closely involved with the project planning and budget from the early stages. Kennedy O'Callaghan Architects also studied options for more extensive development of the site and carried out a feasibility study for building additional accommodation in the extensive garden.
