New Build
A new 120 place primary school, funded through the Targeted Capital Fund of the DfES, and situated on a sensitive green field site lying on the periphery of the village of Tiverton. We worked closely with the Planning Authority to develop sensitive architectural solutions that respect the setting and context of the site without becoming pastiche interpretations of the local vernacular. The school offers a range of sustainable design features with materials chosen with reference to the BRE Green Guide to Specification. We adopted a mixed palette including timber cladding, sedum roofs to class bases and locally sourced masonry cladding. The school has a biomass boiler meaning that over its lifetime the school’s heating strategy will cause no net increase in carbon dioxide levels. All surface water drainage is retained on site and addressed through porous surfaces and soakaway provision. The sedum roof further attenuates surface water run off from the building. All principal areas of the building are naturally ventilated. A range of passive measures have been deployed including roof vents, brise soleil and plenum chambers. The whole building has been dynamically modelled using BRE approved IES software to assess ventilation, daylighting and CO2 performance
