Listed Building - Grade II, Within a Conservation Area
13 Little Underbank is a Grade II listed building situated in the heart of Stockport's historic centre, it forms an axis between Market Place and the Underbanks with an external staircase linking the two. We obtained planning permission and listed building consent for the redevelopment which includes a contemporary co-working space for the first floor. This project forms part of a wider Townscape Heritage Initiative which will restore the street to its former glory. Along with sensitive restoration of the masonry and windows, we will also reinstate the arched stone shop front which was removed in the 1960’s. At some point in its colourful history, the building had its top storey and pitched roof removed. This fortuitously left a flat roof on a level with the adjacent Saint Petersgate Bridge, which leads to the MarketPlace. The second phase of this project will see the transformation of this roof into a vibrant roof terrace adding to the street level activity. Restoring and re-using old buildings is kind to the environment for obvious reasons, we have taken the opportunity to vastly improve the energy performance of the building by internally insulating the walls, the roof and upgrading the performance of the windows, whilst still retaining the character of the building.
