New Build, Alteration to existing property, Within a Conservation Area
The new 630m2 Luan Gallery for contemporary art in Athlone, Ireland opened to the public on 29 November 2012. The building is located on a spectacular site overlooking the River Shannon, adjacent the town’s historic bridge, castle and the Catholic church of St Peter & St Paul. The scheme involved the conversion of the town’s historic 1897 Father Matthew Hall into a new gallery, and the addition of both a new wing to provide temporary white box gallery space and a river ambulatory which overlooks the River Shannon, and links the two gallery spaces. The Luan Gallery has been established to promote a dynamic contemporary visual arts programme of both established and emerging artists. It has already developed strong links with Dublin’s Irish Museum of Modern Art enabling it to bring major contemporary art to the regions. This is Keith Williams' 3rd major project for the same Client in Athlone, having earlier completed the celebrated Athlone Civic Centre 2001-2005 and the Army Memorial 2010.
