Spains Hall, Finchingfield is a Grade I Listed Country House which was built in 1475. The original timber framed Hall House slowly grew with the addition of Tudors Kitchens, then the Elizabethan Great Hall and larger Solar wing. During the Baroque period the entire front was re-faced with a brick façade and Dutch gables. A large rear wing was added in the Georgian period, when many rooms were remodelled to suit the new fashion. More recently, in the 19th Century, another brick gable was added to the front and laundry/bread making facilities were inserted. In 2006 the building was desperately in need of repair and a new source of income was required to service the upkeep. Listed Building Consent and Planning Permission were approved for a new wedding use, which meant the significant rooms including: The Great Hall, Withdrawing Room, Dining Room, Vestibule and Library could be opened to the public for the first time. The Tapestry Bed Chamber, with elaborate Queen Anne bed, and the adjacent Dressing Chamber were to provide a spectacular and magical place for the bride and bridesmaids to prepare before the wedding. Between March 2007 and 2011 conservation work by Kay Pilsbury Thomas Architects revealed the incredible history of this house, whilst retaining, divulging and conserving the important architectural features and fabric. The approach involved a full historic recording of the building. The proposals then involved clever ways of hiding the new modern services whilst revealing its individual historic elements.
