Within a Conservation Area
The new house extension replaces an existing conservatory in order to be more sympathetic to the existing house as well as create a more efficient and pleasant internal space. The new extension space creates a strong visual connection to the rear garden, whilst the modern construction methods allows the extension to substantially improve in energy efficiency. The current house has beautiful greenery to the front and back of the house. The redesign of the extension was tailored to framing the views of the outside and creating a bright internal space. The earliest discussions with the clients were centred around how we could frame the view of the garden from inside the house, and how once you walk into the extension you would be welcomed by the beautiful greenery of the garden and mature trees beyond. The extension is about celebrating views towards the garden through the framing of views. The extension is clad in Douglas Fir, creating a soft palette against the existing beige-appearance brickwork. The extension is also critical in allowing light into the house, therefore maximising the light aperture was important in creating a bright internal space. The south-facing kitchen and dining space is a space that is visually connected to the garden, whilst also acting as an access route into the garden from the house.
