Within a Conservation Area, Listed Building - Grade II
This Grade II Listed Chelsea House project is situated on Thurloe Place directly opposite the Victoria and Albert Museum. The project involves the sensitive restoration, internal remodelling, roof dormer extensions, and a double-storey rear extension of a historic Victorian townhouse. The architectural proposals balance new design elements with historic preservation. The existing house is a four-storey, Grade II listed Victorian Italianate terrace built between 1840 and 1843. Due to changes of use over more than a century, including time as part of the French Embassy, historic plan forms had evolved and some of the original detailing had been lost. In order to sensitively modernise the Grade II listed Chelsea house, new extensions were proposed featuring a lightweight glass and zinc design. The new glazed extensions enable the lower ground and ground floors to open directly onto the newly landscaped garden. At roof level, new dormer windows allow the upper loft to become fully inhabitable. This allowed the creation of new living space while sensitively aligning with the wider terrace roofscape design.
