Kings Crescent Estate Phases 1&2 forms the first part of a major 765 mixed-tenure home estate masterplan for Hackney Council. The project represents an alternative model to large-scale estate regeneration, demolition and rebuild by integrating rejuvenated existing social housing and new buildings within an ambitious public realm strategy of new public routes that connect the estate back into its urban surroundings and landscaped playable spaces. Overall, these first phases deliver 374 homes (273 new and 101 refurbished), 50% of which are for social rent, all housed in buildings designed and refurbished by Karakusevic Carson Architects and Henley Halebrown. Essential to the project has been the significant programme of engagement where existing residents and local people have helped to define all aspects of the scheme including the planning of streets, internal layouts and material specifications. This first part of the project completed in 2017 and has been awarded a RIBA National and Civic Trust Award.
