Hackney
£0.5m to £0.99M
Brownfield site, Listed Building - Grade II
108, Camden Road , Tunbridge Wells , Kent , TN1 2QX , United Kingdom
A publicly accessible urban wetland wildlife reserve in the London Borough of Hackney, alongside several Thames Water reservoirs. A listed but redundant coal store was converted into a hub for the project, incorporating a flexible cafe and training/education space. Substantial structural work stabilised the superstructure and created a rooftop terrace for viewing birdlife and long vistas across reservoirs. The project has been hugely successful with high profile coverage on the BBC, mentions in the international press, and an opening by Sir David Attenborough. Wildlife and visitor numbers have significantly exceeded expectations, and the scheme was voted as the People’s Choice winner in the Hackney Design Awards.
