The remodelled and extended Visitor and Interpretation Centre has been conceived as a key catalyst in a wider regeneration masterplan of Reculver on the north coast of Kent. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Saxon twin towers and the Roman Fort, the improved centre is highly visible in the coastal landscape. The use of curved sweet chestnut rainscreen cladding with zinc details is designed to be a sustainable and robust response to everything the north sea can throw at it. There are framed views from the organically shaped education room to the twin towers to the east, the country park to the west and the Kentish Flats Windfarm to the north. Accessibility and flexibility are key themes to the interior with careful use of colour, surfaces and detailing of junctions and doors. The project was partly funded by the Kentish Flats Windfarm and so interpretation and display of renewable technologies in action was an important element. The centre is heated with a wood burning stove linked with solar thermal panels for hot water. Photovoltaic cells contribute to the supply of electric power and ongoing monitoring of carbon savings are displayed in the reception area
