Having previously worked on and understood the adjacent building, we undertook the challenge of sympathetically restoring this Grade II listed building in Victoria. We were briefed to bring a more contemporary and fresh edge to the building. Whilst modernising the tired interior, the impractical cellular spaces were rationalised and old and new elements were carefully juxtaposed to dramatic effect. The period balustrading to the existing stair was used to create a feature backdrop behind the new glazed panels to the ground floor entrance area. The installation of a large modern mirror was used to link all floors, bringing more light and a sense of openness to the internal stairwell.
