A Grade I listed building set within an historic site which also contains the remains of a Roman settlement, itself a scheduled monument. The decorative hammer beam roof of the Main Hall, dating from 1456, is considered to be one of Somerset's finest. The 15th century building was substantially enlarged in the Elizabethan period, further modifications were carried out in the following centuries, the final extensions being completed in the first half of the 19th century. Each phase of alterations covered up and sometimes damaged previous work and the building has deteriorated recently. The present owner embarked upon an extensive programme of careful and considered repairs and alteration supported by historic research and a Conservation Plan. DEFRA grant aid was obtained to assist the repairs to agricultural buildings and estate walls.
