Within a Conservation Area, Alteration to existing property, New Build
1st & 2nd Floor Studios , 1 Bridge Buildings , The Strand , Barnstaple , Devon , EX31 1HA , United Kingdom
We oversaw this project from initial concept design to successful completion, achieving a high standard of finish and co-coordinating with the main contractor, specialist pool design company and architectural glazing specialists. The new, detached pool building includes changing facilities, wet room showers, kitchen and hot tub, with views through the established pine trees over the town to the sea. The design approach reflects the particular style of the Phillip Carr early 20th century Arts and Crafts main house and other houses immediately around it in the Beer Conservation Area, with plain clay tiled hipped roof, limestone plinths and dressings and oak posts. The modern introduction of larger windows and partially glazed roof provide plenty of natural light without glare and connect the inside to the garden and views. The beautiful deep blue mosaic tiled flush deck pool mirrors the oak king post trusses and vaulted ceiling above it, with half glazed hipped end to the sitting area which opens out onto a terrace. The internal environment is controlled with a pool cover stored in the bottom of the pool and an air handling unit which controls both pool water temperature and relative humidity in the space, maintaining a suitable environment all year round.
