Listed Building - Grade I
1st & 2nd Floor Studios , 1 Bridge Buildings , The Strand , Barnstaple , Devon , EX31 1HA , United Kingdom
Refurbishment of one of Bath’s grand grade I listed crescent terrace houses, turning it back into a private home, having been university accommodation for over 50 years. This involved the removal of modern partitions, ceilings and fittings, the repair and cleaning of much of the original period details which survive and the installation of new services. There was substantial damage from some brutal insertions eg; structural beams to support a library on the first floor that had knocked through highly decorated cornices. In other areas eg; the electrical installation; the use of surface mounted fittings meant that only removal of screw holes in the plaster was required. Also putting a kitchen into a principal room in the house, linked to the other living rooms which is one of the principal challenges of living in historic buildings in the 21st century. Early investigations beneath plaster and comparison with neighbouring properties uncovered elegant arches linking the front and rear parts of the principal rooms plan, recreating a magnificent first floor drawing room and allowing a kitchen opening onto a drawing room on the ground floor, which is one of the principal challenges of 21st century living in historic buildings.
