Alteration to existing property, Listed Building - Grade II, Within a Conservation Area
Jflemay Architecture and Design
Jflemay Architecture and Design, Cromwell Place Co-Working , 4 Cromwell Place , London , SW7 2JE , United Kingdom
The client acquired an upper-ground floor flat in a white-stuccoed, grade-II listed terrace built in the 1860s on Queen’s Gate opposite the Natural History Museum. While the flat features four-metre high rooms and period mouldings in excellent condition, it has also been unsympathetically subdivided over the decades. A historical ceiling was concealed behind dry lining; a kitchen was built without natural light or ventilation; a window was walled up. We propose to open the kitchen to the living room, restoring an archway between the two, and surrounding the kitchen with walls glazed in their upper part. The false ceiling above the kitchen will be removed, exposing the historical ceiling and gaining 70 cm in height. The walled-up window will be opened to bring light and air to a new bathroom. French doors in PVC will be replaced with timber. An acoustically-rated oak parquet will provide visual unity throughout the flat.
