Cambridge University is established as one of the world’s leading universities. As part of the plans for the long term growth of the University, the West Cambridge masterplan is being developed to accommodate a number of research institutions, including Physics, Chemistry and Engineering, which are being relocated from the centre of Cambridge. Jestico + Whiles are designing a dynamic new Student Hub building, located at the heart of the West Campus. The project is part of the University’s vision to transform West Cambridge into a lively research campus. The new 8,000 sqm building will include a range of flexible spaces, including social, study, office and teaching facilities to support existing needs and to unlock future development on the campus. The building will also include the University’s new central catering facility, serving the wider University across Cambridge. The new building will complement the facilities currently provided on the campus and will foster collaboration and sense of community among the departments. This new shared resource will help establish a sense of vibrancy and activity on the West Campus, providing much needed facilities to support the neighbouring academic institutions as well as providing outreach opportunities for the local community. The building will be highly flexible, responding to day to day changes in use and activity and in the longer term will allow future adaptability to meet the University’s changing requirements over time. The building will be highly sustainable, achieving BREEAM Excellent. It is proposed to link the building systems with the Cavendish III laboratories opposite, also designed by Jestico + Whiles, creating efficiencies and energy benefits to both buildings.
