Jessop and Cook were appointed by Oxford City Council to explore the feasibility of renovating a dilapidated community centre in Bullingdon, Oxford. Ultimately, it was found that starting from scratch was the only feasible option, so we developed the design for an innovative new public building. This included running design consultations with local groups, submitting for planning and building control, acting as lead designer to coordinate specialist sustainability consultants and off-site manufacturers, and administering the contract between the Council and the Contractor. The resulting building brings together its area’s varied communities in one quality, sustainable environment. From the small public realm in front which opens onto Peat Moors park and its generous entrance atrium which provides an extra room where the public can casually gather, to the large halls and smaller rooms which can host events and classes, the building is designed to foster a sense of community with its flexibility and clear open design language. It also has a highly insulated, prefabricated timber frame construction, heat recovery ventilation, solar panels, and solar shading, and makes use of low-carbon materials.
