East Riding College’s new Beverley campus is an important element in the wider Flemingate proposal – a retail and leisure development plan that will attract significant footfall into the area. With this in mind, the College formulated a brief to create a modern facility in a single location that would act as the face of the Institution - actively promoting its community offer and proactive in the recruitment of potential students. Our solution: In order to realise the College’s requirements, the design team and client team took a collaborative approach, working alongside the College and the stakeholders in the development of a concept which concentrates on the historic Beverley Minster as an inspirational focal point for students and staff, emphasising a sense of place and historic context. The internal accommodation is arranged around the three main external spaces: the central courtyard, the delivery courtyard and arrivals recess, and the large internal atrium space. The atrium space is a multi-functional hub, presenting a large, welcoming and open space to visitors whilst affording excellent views of the Minster. Much of the ground floor accommodation to the west is “customer facing”, being hair and beauty salons, restaurants, along with the learner services hub. This latter element provides for both public and student interface and is an essential component of the College, offering information and guidance to potential clients as well as servicing the needs of current clients. The ground floor to the south and east incorporates the Environmental Technology Centre. This is a customer facing unit which offers training and development in “clean” engineering subjects, interfacing with the engineering workshop retained within the development. Optimal natural ventilation and daylight are present in the design of the teaching and breakout spaces and materials have been used which will provide good life cycle costing and relatively low maintenance. The new Beverley Campus for East Riding College is a future-proofed, cohesive learning environment and community resource for East Riding College and the local community. The BREEAM Excellent building incorporates an Environmental Technologies Centre, flexible learning spaces and work-place learning environments for vocational study.
