New Build
Movement through this new three-bedroom house is uninterrupted by corridors or fire doors. In their place is a soaring space, made possible by the creativity of engineers Price & Myers, culminating in a study-gallery with indoor cactus garden, which in turn leads onto a south-facing roof terrace. As with almost all such sites the potential for intrusive overlooking from adjacent properties in all directions poses complex challenges to the architect to maintain privacy while maximizing daylight. The basic solution here was to internalize the house by combining small and strategically placed windows with a large fixed rooflight located over the triple height stairwell so as to minimize midday solar gain. The ground floor opens out onto to the rear courtyard garden with a window and four full height glazed doors, and secondary security shutters, all of which slide back within the wall thickness. One view that is deliberately not restricted is that from the kitchen at the front. It is too easy to turn ones back completely on the mews and the panoramic kitchen window here generates security for residents and visitors alike.
