Alteration to existing property
What appears from the street to be a small two storey semi-detached house is in fact a tardis-like four-storey home of 380sqm. In this third phase of work on the property Jeff Kahane + Associates, working with interior designer Michelle Ziff, have gutted the previously cramped top floor to create a master bedroom, en-suite bathroom and sun terrace, and most dramatically have excavated an open-plan basement under the entire property. By landscaping and levelling the steeply sloping site, we were able to create basement rooms that open up directly onto the rear garden, and thereby enhance the play options for the family’s children. Hardwood used externally on the terracing and in the garden iscomposed of undulating plinths creating a combination of seating, steps, storage and lighting. The new curved glass balustrading to the terrace and the cascading stairs slicing through the rear façade direct the user down from ground floor level to the garden. Green roof gardens at ground and second floor levels add to the integration of the building with its surrounding landscape.
