Following successful completion of new science laboratories for Congleton High School in 2011, appointment was received for a rolling programme of schemes at the school. These included new entrance and reception areas, classroom extension and new science laboratory, refenestration of the existing three storey building, and refurbishment of the SEN block. Assistance was also given to the school in gaining funding from the government for these works under the ACMF funding stream. The existing entrance and reception area were not visible upon arriving at the school. They were dated and not up to modern day standards. The design principles were to provide a new contemporary welcoming approach and defined entrance to the school building and to provide the school with an enlarged and reconfigured reception and waiting area with designated office areas and new toilets. Through careful design and consideration of the site’s context, the reception area was reconfigured and an extension was created at first floor to provide more modern classroom facilities in keeping with the school’s long term master plan. The design was developed to reflect and complement the appearance of the new sixth form building recently completed at the school. The project also included modifications to the fenestration and refurbishment of the adjoining three storey building. Planning consent was obtained for a first floor link to the existing school with six new classrooms at first floor. The entirety of the front and rear elevations of the main three storey school building were refenestrated. The project was a finalist in the LABC North West Building Awards in the Best Educational Building category.
