New Build
The development proposal was to build a new housing development at Chadwick Fields, Middlewich by Muir Group Housing Association in liaison with Cheshire County Council to provide affordable and special needs housing. The land and existing building are owned by and will remain in the ownership of Cheshire County Council. Cheshire County Council have entered into an agreement with Muir Group Housing Association to provide affordable housing partially for general needs and partially for special needs. Refurbishment of the existing building was considered but because of the demands for wheelchair access and the requirement for use of the building for special needs with individual apartments, it was found to be unrealistic to subdivide the existing building. The most viable solution was then to demolish the existing building and construct a new building of similar size and type on the footprint of the existing building. The coach house to the rear corner of the plot was retained and converted to two houses and a row of new houses and one bungalow were provided off Coronation Road. The design rationale behind the proposed apartment block was to retain a similar appearance to the existing property, maintaining the character of the brick building with stone coining, slate roof and stone heads and sills to windows. The design also relocates the original porch to create the new entrance to the apartments. The houses have been designed to continue the street scene down Coronation Road whilst reflecting the character of the main house with traditional windows with stone heads and sills and a stone plinth.
