Hidden within the centre of a residential block, enclosed on all sides by 8-metre high party walls with only a 1-metre wide access from the street, the proposal to insert a house into this void presented a great challenge. Within the restricted space a house of volume and light has been created. Light was treated as a material around which the house was formed. The main living space took the maximum volume the site could afford and become generous beyond any expectation when entering the house. As you enter the 5.5-metre high room, light falls from above through the large window to the court. At the far end light pours in through the rooflight. Both open to allow ample cross ventilation. The core of the house is a concrete structure. As it rises through the house it forms the kitchen enclosure, the stairs and spreads out to form the living room ceiling. A surface treatment was developed by the office, which gives the concrete a highly reflective and luxurious finish unlike standard concrete. The stair to the upper levels follows the perimeter of the site, accessing a guest room and the master bedroom. Within the pitched volume of the master bedroom sits the last element of the concrete core - a group of low walls and enclosures for the bathroom.
