A luxury retail design concept to facilitate a major repositioning for this long-established high quality wholesale fashion brand. The design of the first flagship store in Bond Street reinforces a subliminal message of the brand’s historical Scottish roots through scale, colour and material whilst at the same time projecting a bold, new international image of British Glamour. Arranged over basement, ground and first floors, the store uses the basement for storage and staff areas, with Womens collection on ground floor and Mens on first floor. A grand oval staircase links ground to first floor level, the surrounding wall in roach bed Portland stone. The balustrade to the stair is deliberately reminiscent of Scottish baronial armoury displays. Merchandising tables were designed to be reminiscent of the scale of a large snooker table, and small turret spaces in corners again echo the Scottish baronial theme. The cashmere collection is displayed in the manner of a country house library, while the floor contrasts Portland stone with sections of inset carpet. Additional stores were designed for Sloane Street, Heathrow Airport, Selfridges and Tokyo. The practice also produced a Design Manual for concessions for use by licensees around the world. “Labels from Prada to Pringle are making their London shops irresistibly sexy to draw in the crowds. Pringle called in rising star architects Wells Mackereth to effect the transformation.” Evening Standard
