Conversion of a former clogg factory into an apartment in London Bridge The project is conceived as a place in which to withdraw from a busy working life, and as both a continuation of and a place to reflect on the city beyond. The existing roof structure was removed and replaced with two habitable steel and timber box girders which span the existing brick structure and create a new storey at roof level. The boxes create terrirtories within, between and below and become devices which orientate functions within the building and bring light and volume to the storeys below. Terraces occupy the spaces between the two enclosures to create a series of interlinked roof gardens. A bathroom and kitchen are formed from in-situ concrete, conceived as large pieces of furniture built within the existing brick fabric of the building. These items of furniture are used to delineate space and create thresholds in lieu of physical walls.
