Jacobs were commissioned to undertake design studies to improve access to public transport within Aylesbury Town Centre, following designation as a Regional Transport Hub. The existing bus interchange facilities were located in the undercroft of a shopping centre, and were constructed over 20 years ago. The facilities are outdated, and the environment was dark, unwelcoming and lacking prominence. The scope of our work included assessment of opportunities to relocate or reconfigure the existing bus interchange providing improved passenger waiting facilities, a safer environment and the formation of stronger links to the nearby rail station. The project also encompasses wide reaching Urban design initiatives to improve accessibility to public transport including the design of a pedestrian / cycleway bridge and the creation of 3 new high quality urban spaces and a transport information building. The complexity of the project demanded a high degree of collaboration with our Architects working closely with traffic and transport planners, highways and bridge engineers, and landscape and urban designers to provide a fully integrated solution linking transport modes and spaces within the town centre and dramatically improving access within the town.
