When Islington Architects were commissioned to prepare a masterplan for the Marquess estate, the once celebrated social housing development had developed a reputation for technical failings and serious anti-social behaviour. The complex network of routes through the estate were confusing and, in some instances, unsafe. Islington Architects undertook a major redesign of the estate, introducing a more coherent street pattern, and proposing a series of new buildings and open spaces. The works included selective demolition, redesigned infrastructure and the construction of new homes, a community centre and a school. Existing dwellings were renovated, and their technical and environmental performance greatly improved. In addition, three new public parks were created. All of this work was completed while residents remained in their dwellings. Shortlisted for a Housing Design Award
