The site, which is sandwiched between a Victorian railway viaduct and 1960s tower blocks, is too narrow to accommodate conventional housing typologies. Instead, a terrace of courtyard houses is proposed, orientated away from the railway line, with the main rooms facing private courtyards. The ground floor will be clad in dark brickwork, a reference to the viaduct’s muscular aesthetic. The upper floors will be clad in white render, creating an impression of lightness, and helping to reflect light into the dwellings. The new housing development will be accompanied by landscaping improvements that will benefit the existing dwellings on the estate.
