Alteration to existing property, Brownfield site, Listed Building - Grade II, Within a Conservation Area
Unit 67 , Whitemantle Court , 29 Rookwood Way , London , E3 2XT , United Kingdom
This project involved transforming a poorly converted 1990s flat in the Grade-II listed Imperial Hall near Old Street, London. The renovation revealed layers of original Edwardian brick and steel, alongside bomb-damaged repairs, creating a striking contrast with the building's grand external facade. Influenced by the client's time in Japan, the design incorporated elements like a Japanese-style communal bathing area and a tatami relaxation room. A sun-viewing window was also added, reflecting Japanese garden traditions. The renovation emphasized the seamless flow of spaces, blending historical elements with modern design inspired by vintage anime and cultural references.
