Great Blunts Farm, a Grade II listed former farmhouse in the grounds of the golf course at Stock Brook Country Club, in Billericay, Essex is a large timber framed house dating from the beginning of the 16th century. It sits in a group of buildings including a 17th century timber barn, and some 19th century stables planned around a stockyard. The brief was to convert the buildings to a holiday and wedding venue, to be used in conjunction with our client’s country club. The restored house is to offer nine spacious bedrooms and the outbuildings renovated to offer a further 15 holiday apartments. Works involved demolition of later unsympathetic structures and to conserve and repair as much as possible the original 16th century fabric, using traditional materials and techniques. A modern bathroom was inserted for each of the bedrooms in the house, and the stables were converted into additional sleeping accommodation. New heating, plumbing and electrical services were installed with the entire complex being heated by a ground source heat pump, taking advantage of the Renewable Heat Incentive. A new contemporary orangery was added to the 16th century house, in place of 1960’s extensions that were demolished.
