The Clients wanted to create a forever family home in Tewin, Welwyn, that would offer a contemporary interior and maintain the character of the original building. The project was located in an area with strict Planning restrictions where development was tightly controlled. We secured Planning Permission and used Permitted Development Rights to meet the Client's brief. The layout of the house was completely reconfigured with two new extensions facing the woodland garden. These glazed wings incorporated bifolding doors which offered views over the garden and can be opened up to create a strong connection between the internal and external spaces. The exterior of the home was redesigned to improve the thermal performance and minimise the energy required to heat the home. Polished concrete was used throughout the ground floor to create a seamless flow between the rooms and incorporated underfloor heating. A curved walnut staircase was designed to curve around a wine cellar and create a stunning entrance feature. The changes to the home have create a highly sustainable design and flexible home which will meet the current and future needs of the family.
