Listed Building - Grade II
This artist's studio and garage, near Hastings, sits between a Grade II Listed cottage and a converted windmill. The client for the project lives in the listed house, and wanted to demolish an existing dilapidated shed in his rear garden to create a new garage, and an airy studio space in which he could paint. The building was carefully sited in order to minimise the impact on its immediate surroundings. Although facing the public footpath, the studio is extremely discreet, with only a strip of clerestory glazing suggesting the often frenzied artistic activity within. Its tall pyramidal roof is distorted, and skewed towards the north light, away from the the neighbouring lane and adjacent house. A tall timber-framed glazed elevation opens the studio to the garden, whilst the brick base houses a double garage accessed from the lane to the rear.
