Ingleton Wood’s healthcare design team were appointed by the NHS Trust, via Sodexo, as Architect, Mechanical and Electrical Engineer, Structural Engineer and Cost Consultant for a phased programme of refurbishment work across the hospital, in response to the COVID 19 pandemic. Although the hospital was only constructed as a PFI build, 15 years ago, work in this environment is inevitably challenging, made more so with both the design and construction being undertaken at a time of immense pressure on NHS Services, at the height of the pandemic. This Trust’s response was to increase the number of critical care beds and to increase the space available in the Emergency Department with the addition of RAFT (Rapid Assessment and Treatment Bays). This work also necessitated the refurbishment of an existing area to form a new Paediatric Assessment Unit. As Lead Consultant, we were required to consult extensively with the clinical teams across the hospital to form the designs through the relevant RIBA Stages. These were complex projects, involving the provision of infrastructure, delivered in unprecedented times and in a live environment. All were delivered on time and budget and have recently been nominated for “Best Healthcare Project” at the Partnership Awards.
