Scheduled Ancient Monument, Within a Conservation Area
The Museum of Power is a Scheduled Ancient Monument sited within the Langford Conservation Area. The museum is located in a former Southend Waterworks pumping station that was built in the 1920’s to house the three huge steam pumps that were required to send treated water via a pipe to Southend-on-Sea. In general, museums are reliant on visitor numbers and thus the direction of the design was towards increasing footfall through improving access to and display of the collections and improvement of visitor facilities, with the ultimate goal of broadening the appeal to create growth in visitor numbers. The Museum of Power secured funding through The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Ingleton Wood’s Multi-disciplinary team were appointed by the Trustees of the Museum of Power to design and procure an extension to the existing building to form a new feature visitors entrance, shop, WC’s and café sitting area. Ingleton Wood’s Multi-disciplinary team worked closely with the project stakeholders to manage the scope of works and ensure both project objectives and budget were controlled throughout design development, procurement and construction phases of the contract.
