CEIBS (China Europe International Business School) is the leading business school in Asia. With its main campus located in Shanghai, CEIBS provides higher business education to top businessmen from all over the world. Its MBA program is ranked #1 in Asia and its EMBA 13th globally by the prestigious Financial Times.CEIBS decided to expand and build a new campus in Beijing for which appointed IDOM as Design Architect. The new campus in Beijing has a built area of 19,000 m2 distributed in three floors within a 33,100 m2 site in Zhong Guan Cun Science Park, on the outskirts of Beijing. The design is led by three requirements: 1) state of the art teaching functionality, 2) the masterplan of Zhong Guan Cun Science Park, which proposes a series of compact buildings scattered in the forest similar to small islands in the ocean, and finally 3) the client´s need of building the campus in two phases and making it look good and finished also at the end of phase 1. The building is composed of a basement and three more floors which will occupy completely the plot at the end of the second construction phase. The ground floor includes the more public and principal uses such as the lecture hall, the amphitheatres classrooms, discussion rooms, bar and what we call main street which organises the principal building functional circulations and the social life among the students. The courtyards, like in the case of traditional Chinese architecture, provide a very good climate control. The upper two floors include additional discussion rooms and professors and staff working spaces. These floors are organized as fingers linked to a long corridor which is spatially included above the main street space. Each floor has a different shape and a different relationship with the surrounding forest. The traditional Chinese architecture and philosophy fascinated us prior to this assignment, and it has been the driver of our architectural ideas helping us to shape the project. This is easily recognized in the choice of colours and materials, and also in the spatial configuration of the building. This is the way the building represents CEIBS spirit of encounter between China and Europe. The construction of phase 1 has been completed. However, it will be in phase 2 when the building will be able to express the dynamic concept of balance of Yin Yang of the Chinese architecture.
