Within the framework of the Deusto 2014 Strategic Plan and in compliance with the obligations of the call for Campus of International Excellence, the University of Deusto has set the goal of offering the best possible service to its students and society as a whole, by undertaking this project on its main building, “La Literaria”. The key action is enlargement of public spaces to foster relations and meetings between students and academic staff, thus implementing the spirit of the Bologna Plan.At the same time, steps have been taken ensure the conservation and maintenance of the building. The renovation work focuses on optimising the building’s accessibility, safety, comfort and energy efficiency. The interior spaces were also reorganised to ensure that they are suitable to the university¿s programmes and needs at the present time. One of the main objectives of these building improvements is to house the new DARC- Deusto Advanced Research Centre. The architectural design of the project mainly focuses on respecting and enhancing the original building’s spaces and practical aspects. The building dates from 1886 and has been listed in the monument category. With this aim in mind, all of the work in the different spaces aimed to re-establish the organisational layout of the building. To this effect, the walkway on the main floors has been recovered as a key reference point in the organisation and distribution of the interior spaces. The walkway now completely encircles the cloisters The patios have also been covered, supported by walls over 125 years old which have been declared heritage property. This has endowed the area with a sense of extreme weightlessness in structure and concept.
