The Reuben Business Centre (RBC) is a three-storey renovation and extension to an existing 1960s teaching block and accommodates ICT, business enterprise, science and Sixth Form studies for students attending Oxford Spires Academy. Making a striking statement adjacent to the Academy’s main entrance, the RBC is designed as a uniquely identifiable building; wrapping itself around the existing structure to draw visitors into its voluminous and impressive atrium. The Academy’s educational aspirations and branding run throughout the design. Exterior and interior material and colour palettes have been chosen to create a professional appearance, emulating a high quality workplace environment. Satisfying the pedagogical needs of the students, this formal but contemporary space also appeals to the local adult education and business community, making the Centre very marketable and a long-term commercial asset. Central to the naturally lit atrium void is an ICT research hub, which encourages self development, interaction and collaboration outside of the classroom. Resonating around the hub are inspirational interpretations on the Academy’s strap-line ‘be the best you can be’. The design uses super graphics and lingual manifestations to ensure individuals experience a sense of belonging and feel inspired by their surroundings. Students and visitors also benefit from a 330 seat assembly theatre for group learning and performance, whereas the flexible nature of the classroom space allows for changes in student demand and variations in learning styles. Also looking to the future the design is inherently sustainable, using simple, low cost solutions such as natural ventilation, photovoltaic panels, and high performance materials to reduce the Academy’s long-term spend.
