The former Neptune Yard shipbuilding site in Walker has been transformed from a derelict space following extensive ground remediation works to allow construction of a new 50,000sq.ft purpose built manufacturing building for the construction of the worlds largest wind turbine blades. The blades at 71.5m long and 5.5m wide at it's widest will be built by Clipper Wind Power Marine Ltd for their Project Britannia offshore site in the North sea.The production facility is 160m long, 28m wide and 18m high and will accommodate space for the construction of 2 full size blades. 2 no. overhead cranes manoeuvre the completed blades out of the building where they will be loaded onto barges for onward shipment to the North sea. Other space within an attached ancillary area of the building comprises open plan office space, changing and shower facilities as well as staff welfare facilities all of which have an outlook onto the river. The building achieved a BREEAM 'very good' rating and incorporates some environmental features such as the use of air source heat pumps to provide underfloor heating, solar panels to pre heat hot water, rainwater harvesting system and low energy lighting'
