The transformation of Rectory Lane Cemetery. A project conserving and landscaping a formerly neglected three-acre cemetery to create an accessible public space where considered activities and events can take place alongside quiet reflection. The volunteer built Retreat, pictured here, and the careful renovation of both the existing Sexton’s hut and the 1930’s ‘Seat of Remembrance’ of Brigadier General Mildmay Foot, with characterful arms sculpted in the form of a pair of Beorcham Irish Setters, are highlighted projects carried out by Hugo Hardy Architect. The project has met the challenge of weaving public participation, enjoyment and celebration with the restored sense of personal space, dignity and sanctuary. A loving community effort that all of Berkhamsted can cherish.
