New Build, Sited in Greenbelt land
In a closed competition of selected practices, Hub won the opportunity to design a new Sixth Form and Music Block for Aldenham School. The site occupies a small pocket of land within a green belt zone. With a sensitive approach to scale and materials, Hub obtained permission with a first Application. The scheme provides teaching and gathering spaces within a traditional form that acknowledges the adjacent buildings. Working with the Green Oak Company, the building informs and educates, the exposed frame offers generous, characterful rooms. The building entrance hallway reveals the excitement and business of the activity within the building. A triple height atrium rises to a bridge with a glimpse to the music block and 6th Form spaces. This hall also acts as a through route and is detailed to accommodate the heavy school traffic. This is not an ordinary educational space but one that is already embraced and enjoyed as a durable building of quality. At the same time the building meets all Building regulations, BB93 and Part L.
